Orionids by Marco Langbroek (Voorschoten)

Visual observations 16/17 October

What a beatifull night this was!

Due to a high above Scandinavia and a continental wind, the skies here have turned extremely clear and the air very dry. So, ideal conditions to go for a hunt targetting early Orionids. A table with data is at the end of this mail.

I started at 0:55 UT (2:55 local time) and to my excitement counted a Lm of +6.5 in both Taurus and Pegasus and even +6.6 in Perseus; in 20 years of observing from Voorschoten, I've seldom had such a deep limiting magnitude! Later this night, Lm slightly (but only slightly) dropped to +6.4, still extremely good for my location. The sky was star-spangled, the air tranquile and dry. Orion and Taurus and the winter milky way stood out very well, I could count 11 stars in the Pleiades easily. Temperatures were at 4 degrees Celsius, I reckon it must have been zero at toe-level. And in accordance with the good Lm, meteor rates were very good. In 3.10 hours effective, I observed a total of 62 meteors, of which 12 were Orionids. All meteors have been plotted. Some nice and occasionally bright sporadics appeared (to name some of the best; fast yellow mag. 0 at 1:02 in -damned be the thing!- the Pegasus square; mediumfast mag. 0 at 2:46 in Auriga; fast mag. +1 with short persistent train at 3:51 in Auriga; fast mag. 0 at 4:13 on the Aur-Gem border). Thus, I enjoyed a very satisfying night. Orionids were modestly active and well recognizable, but no particularly bright ones appeared (best one a +2 with 1 sec persistent train at 2:55 in Aries). The first appeared 13 minutes after I started.

My data result in a Orionid ZHR of 5 +- 1; theoretically it should be around 6 (P. Jenniskens, A&A 287 (1994), 990-1013), so isn't that nice?!! There was a low Taurid activity, not particularly attractive although a nice long yellow mag. 0 appeared in Andromeda at 1:28. My data result in a overall Taurid ZHR of 2 +- 1 (theoretically it should be 2 -how nice again!). I also had two possible epsilon Geminids (although according to Marc's video data the stream might not exist), and one early Leo minorid.

At 4:35 UT (6:35 local time) I stopped, because twilight was approaching, fatigue came down upon me and I noted that my mind started to wander from meteors to other attractive things (Lauren in Cairo). This was one of the most enjoyable nights I experienced lately. Since the good weather continues, I think I will be out again coming night, to see whether the Orionids are gradually catching on in activity.

Visual observations 17/18 October

Last night again was such a beatifull clear night. Below a table with my data.

I counted a Lm of +6.3, very good indeed! Activity was therefore accordingly good, in 1.72 hours effective between 2:00 and 4:00 UT (4:00-6:00 local time) I observed 47 meteors. Of these, 11 were Orionids. My data results in a Orionid ZHR of 8 +- 2; theoretically, it should be 8 (P. Jenniskens: A&A 287 (1994), 990-1013), so the stream is right on schedule it seems. No particularly attractive meteors though -the best was a +1 yellow Taurid at 2:32 UT in southern Perseus. Best Orionids were a +2 in Aries at 3:09 UT and another +2 on the Orion-Monoceros border at 3:34 UT. I also noted 2 (out of 3 in total) +2 Leo minorids both with a distinct greenish color. All meteors have been plotted on a gnomonic map.

With 4 degrees C temperature was similar to yesterday night, but there now was an additional chilling wind which made it less pleasant. At ground level it has been freezing, since I heard an early car-owner scraping the ice from his windscreen when I stopped. I kept this night restricted to 2 hours because I have some things to do these days for which I need a clear mind and thus some sleep.

Visual observations 19/20 October

The Orionids made a great performance last night, especially the last observational hour was pretty cool! Below is a table with my data. I observed a mere 2 hours (1.69 effective) from moonset till dawn, and noted 66 meteors of which 31 were Orionids. During the last hour rates were a little bit on the high side (my data for this hour give a ZHR of 38+-9, but I think it is a statistical 'hickup' only due to the appearance of a bunch of Ori's near 3:55 UT; 5 in just 5 minutes! My overall ZHR for this night comes at 28.5+-5, again slightly on the high side but that is due to that last hour. The first hour has a calculated ZHR that is normal, 18+-5). All meteors were plotted on gnomonic maps.

Sky conditions were good although not as excellent as previous nights; there was a slight touch of haze, and some moving streaks of cirrus during the first 40 minutes. During the last 40 minutes, some early KLM birds made themselves a nuisance.

Most marvelous meteor of this night was a yellow -1 Orionid (4:09) with 1 sec persistent train that appeared as a semi-point meteor very close to the radiant! A fast yellowish -1 sporadic appeared near to Capella at 3:25 and had a short 'wake'. I had a bunch of nice +1 and +2 Orionids as well, some with trains. Sorry Marc, but I continue to see epsilon Geminids; 5 this night. Taurid activity is very dull, although I had a nice yellow +2 at 3:03.

Well, this was a very good night indeed! I am not sure if I am able to observe coming night, since I have to give a talk to some amateur archaeologists about flintworking tonight, and weather prospects predict clouds coming in later this day. I skipped last monday night too, since I had a social event which included emptying a bottle of fine Californian wine, which ruins your observations (no, you don't start to see double meteors; in 1993 at the Cagny excavation in France I determined empirically, my dear friends, that 3 glasses of wine make your brightness estimates tip off scale; my sporadics that night had a mean magnitude of +1.8, oops!).

Table with my data from last night is below.

Cheers!
